URGENT CALL FOR GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY INTERVENTIONS FOR KAURU’s RELEASED KIDNAP VICTIMS
It is with a mix of relief and concern that we recently heard report of release of several individuals who were abducted from communities in Kauru over the past few months. While their freedom is a welcome development, the circumstances surrounding their release are a stark reminder of the harrowing experiences they endured.
Reports indicate that some of the victims were freed after their families paid substantial ransoms, while others were released due to the extreme conditions at the kidnappers' hideouts, where hunger and starvation had taken a severe toll. The journey to freedom proved treacherous for some, with a few succumbing to the dire circumstances. In some cases, victims died shortly after their release, having consumed contaminated water they found on the roadside in a bid to quench their thirst.
Those who managed to return to their villages were often found in a state of extreme exhaustion and near unconsciousness, requiring immediate medical attention at the Primary Health Care facility in Kauru town. Many of these individuals, having paid exorbitant ransoms, were left with no financial means to cover their medical expenses or basic needs, leaving them stranded and desperate.
In light of this, we urgently call upon the government, particularly the Executive Chairman of Kauru Local Government, community leaders, and traditional leaders, to provide immediate assistance to these victims. It is imperative that the Chairman takes concrete steps to ensure the full recovery of these individuals, providing them with necessary medical care, food, and other forms of support.
We also implore our traditional rulers to rally behind their communities, offering help and support to those affected by the scourge of banditry. It is only through collective action that we can hope to alleviate the suffering of these victims and work towards a safer, more secure future for our communities.
